Economia 100A

Mañana empiezo nuevamente las clases de Economía en la Universidad Católica, y parece ser que la actualidad (o más bien nuestra clase política) está de mi parte y decidida a entregar mucho material para comentar en clases. Baste la idea de intervenir las empresas en problemas por parte del Estado para que en su infinita sabiduría las administre de la mejor manera posible. Y si a alguien le quedan dudas de  si  pueden administrar bien, baste esta brillante decisión de optar por los oferentes más ineficientes: "Asigne al que use más trabajadores, no importa que sea hasta un 10% más caro". Entonces, yo que compito en forma eficiente, en la próxima licitación voy a ir con más ineficiencia para ganar, pero entonces mi competidor hará lo mismo... total, en la medida en que todos lo hagamos el monto sobre el cual se calcula ese 10% irá en aumento. No soy experto en teoría de juegos ni un gran matemático, pero estoy seguro de que este "modelo chileno de licitación" es explosivo.

Make the darn question!

There's a very interesting article in The Economist on the way animals make decisions, particularly in the case of bees searching for a place to create a new hive. In short: whenever there's a proposal, lots of bees go there and CHECK the reality of it. The article concludes with a warning to the way our representatives make decisions without knowing or understanding what they sign, a reality I've already criticised. And now there's this beautiful article in WIRED explaining the statistics that eventually created the mess we are going through.

Moral of the story: Don't fear to ask. If you don't get it the first time, ask again. If you still don't get it, ask somebody else to explain it. If no one can do so... beware. We live in a society of pretended knowledge that punishes those who candidly expose their ignorance... and that's the first step to living like sheep.

My advice to students (and everybody else, for that matter) "it is OK if you don't know, what's wrong is not to ask..." 

But be sure to do so before the exams!!

Let it sink

Amidst the efforts to rescue everything at all costs, including claims to save manufacturing industries,  it's important to remember Schumpeter's concept of creative destruction: some things should fail... or sink... "At all costs" may be too costly.

Mundo vergonzoso

OK. Tiempo de escribir de nuevo, tras algo más de 3 meses de silencio. Para empezar dos imágenes vergonzosas. La primera es la del Congreso norteamericano aprobando un plan de gasto (que ellos llaman de estímulo) sin ton ni son. 1071 páginas despachadas la noche anterior, con ammendments hechos a mano( donde dice 100 millones se tacha y se pone 150!), que se aprueban sin que haya conciencia de qué dice, y que contiene joyitas como 2.000 millones de dólares para "apoyo de vecindarios" (o algo similar) (No tengo los links porque lo vi en Fox, pero seguro que si los buscan encuentran algo). Such a disgrace! No soy particular fan de un plan de estímulo, fundamentalmente porque se basan en tratar de evitar el ajuste que hay que hacer después de la farra (es algo así como tomar cerveza para la resaca), y sobre todo porque desvían los recursos a voluntad del "legislador" y no donde se necesitan realmente (me gusta más la idea de una rebaja a los impuestos salariales o algo por el estilo, temporal).

Y la otra joyita, la patética imagen (00:30) de la Presidente de Chile al trote porque un ex-dictador la está esperando, dejando botado todo lo que está haciendo... triste... ni los lacayos corren así desde que se acabaron los látigos... y la mujer que encarna la lucha por los DDHH en Chile corre para conversar con él, quien a su vez devuelve esa fidelidad con una columna contraria a los intereses de Chile, sin siquiera la deferencia de advertirselo a su "amiga".

Conclusión, los representantes del pueblo son una manga de irresponsables y los dictadores son figuras respetadas y honorables.... c'est la vie... no se quejen después...

Reducing packaging, at last!!

Among the things that surprised Paula and me during our last year in the UK, was the efficiency of the post mail; and that, in turn, led us to increase our use of Amazon and other online shops. But we were shocked to see the ammount of debris that each package left, which was more absurd amidst the "green conscious" messages we were receiving all the time. I must say, it was not only the online-bought products, almost everything seemed to be overpacked, despite the focus on "going green". So with great pleasure I've seen that Amazon is taking action on the issue. I'm sure this is something Kevin Roberts would call a Lovemark in action!

Porsche, maestro en finanzas

Una de las lecciones que se suelen olvidar al trabajar en finanzas (particularmente en hedge funds) es que las posiciones largas tienen como perdida maxima el 100% de esa inversion, mientras que las cortas no tienen limite en las perdidas potenciales (o sea, la quiebra es el unico limite). Y aqui hay un caso notable publicado en el Economist de esta semana en que Porsche (si, el fabricante de autos) desplumo a varios hedge funds que habian apostado en contra de su compra en VW. Los ejecutivos de la firma dicen que no estaba planeado algo asi, pero como los hedge funds no suelen ser santos de la devocion de mucha gente, el cuento deja un gustillo dulce.

Desde el punto de vista de las lecciones a futuro queda el tema de que pasa con la obligacion de reportar no solo la construccion de posiciones en acciones sino tambien en opciones. Me faltan antecedentes para poder saber hasta donde llega esa obligacion en otros mercados pero es claro que en Alemania no es muy estricta.

For whom the bells toll

During a conversation I had with a member of Fonterra's Board he made me an interesting question: "What would you ask for Chile?". I answered: "If Argentina could clean its mess and finally became the developed country it should be... that would be wonderful". That could create a lot of opportunities for both countries and Chile would greatly benefit from a neighbour growing in order and openly. Yes, Chile has its own problems too, (education, education, education) but I was thinking of the things that do not depend on us.
After watching the way Cristina Fernandez is acting towards their private pension funds, I can't but think it's not just Argentina's problem... they are marching in to a deeper mess than the rest of the world,  and alongside there are wonderful opportunities for Chile that are going down the drain with them...
Shame...
